Martin and Lessard upset in first playoff round at beach volleyball World Tour
BEIJING – After a great performance in round robin play, Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., and Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., were upset in the first round of the playoffs at the $300,000 Grand Slam event on the FIVB beach volleyball World Tour circuit.
Martin and Lessard lost to 24th seeds Cristine Santanna and Andrezza Martins das Chagas of Georgia 21-13, 21-17. In the previous two days the 15th seeded Canadians has posted a 2-1 record in the round robin to finish second in their pool. With the win the Georgians head to the round of 16.
Next on the schedule for Martin and Lessard are the world championships which start Tuesday in Rome.
They are joined by Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney, both of Toronto, in women’s play while the Canadian entry on the men’s side is Christian Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary.
The world championship result can be counted towards one of the12 top results contributing to the FIVB Olympic Ranking. It is the event with the highest allocation of FIVB World Ranking points during the Olympic Qualification Phase.
