Martin and Lessard head to first round playoff match
BEIJING – Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., (photo)and Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., lost a showdown for first spot in their pool and now head to a first round playoff match at the $300,000 Grand Slam event on the FIVB beach volleyball World Tour circuit
Second-seeds Maria Antonelli and Talita Da Rocha Antunes of Brazil defeated the Canadians 21-17, 21-19 to take top spot in pool B and get a bye to the round of 16. Both teams finished the round robin at 2-1. The 15th seeded Canadians plays a first round playoff match earlier Friday.
The top teams in each of the eight pools jump to the round of 16 while the second and third place teams advance to a first round playoff match to battle for the eight available slots for the round of 16.
On the men’s side, Josh Binstock and Richard Van Huizen, both of Toronto, as well as Christian Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary wound up with 0-3 records in the round robin and did not advance.
