Lessard and Martin stopped in qualifyingMOSCOW (June 7, 2012)– Marie-André Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., and Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., fell one win short of advancing to the main draw in Thursday’s qualifying at a stop on the FIVB World Tour circuit in beach volleyball.
After an easy first win in round one, Lessard and Martin lost a second round battle to Brazilians Angela Vieira and Liliane Maestrini 21-12, 22-24, 15-7.
Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City and Kacie MacTavish of Sharon, Ont., as well as Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto were both eliminated in the first round of qualifying.
Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto had a bye to the main draw and start play on Friday. They continue to battle for a top-16 ranking by the end of next weekend’s event in Rome to earn a berth in the Olympic Games. The Canadians are currently 20th.
The other Canadian teams are battling for spots in the Continental Cup Olympic qualifier later this month in Mexico.
The men’s qualifying gets underway on Friday. Canadian entries are Josh Binstock of Toronto and Martin Reader of Comox, B.C.,; Ben Saxton of Calgary and Christian Redmann of Toronto and Maverick Hatch of Comox and Sam Schachter of Toronto.
The Canadian men are also battling for the two entries for the Continental Cup.
