Juniors win, seniors lose in men’s volleyball
HOCE, Slovenia (August 30, 2013)– Canada lost to Bulgaria 25-19, 29-27, 25-20 on Friday in men’s volleyball at a four-country international tournament.
The Canadians and Bulgarians both have 1-1 records. Slovenia improved to 2-0 defeating winless Denmark in Friday’s other match.
Gavin Schmitt of Saskatoon led Canada with 11 points while Fred Winters of Victoria added eight and Jason DeRocco of Winnipeg seven, including four on blocks.
“We lacked focus right from the start,” said Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag. “Our passing was poor at the beginning which forced us to play catch up volleyball. Against a team like Bulgaria that’s a big mistake.”
Bulgaria is ranked ninth in the world and was fourth in last month’s World League tournament. The Canadians are ranked 11th and were a best-ever fifth in World League play.
Canada is currently in Europe tuning up for the North and Central America and Caribbean (NORCECA) Continental Championships from September 23 to 28 in Langley, B.C.
The tournament wraps up Saturday with Canada against Slovakia and Bulgaria facing Denmark.
Canada beats Mexico at U21 World Championships
At the FIVB U21 World Championships in men’s volleyball the semifinal match-ups for Saturday are Brazil-Italy and Russia- France after the four countries posted quarterfinal wins on Friday. In a rather unusual twist, all four countries were in the same group in round robin play.
Meanwhile Canada scored eight aces and defeated Mexico 25-23, 19-25, 25-13, 25-18 in the consolation playoff round. The Canadians face Japan on Saturday with an opportunity to advance to the ninth place match on Sunday.
Jayson McCarthy of Oshawa, Ont., led all scorers with 21 points including five aces.
“We are very happy with the win,” said Canada’s team captain Milan Nikic of Calgary. “We had some problems finding our rhythm in the first two sets. Once we figured things out our service pressure got much better.”
