Heartbreak loss for Canada at U21 worlds

IZMIR, Turkey (August 28, 2013)– Canada lost 22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 23-25, 15-10 to France on Wednesday in the round of 16 at the FIVB U21 World Championships in men’s volleyball.

Danny Demyanenko of Toronto was the top Canadian scorer with 14 points, Brad Gunter of Courtenay, B.C., added 13 and Ryley Barnes of St.Paul, Alta., 11.

"France is probably one of the most systematic teams I’ve seen in this tournament,’’ said Canada’s head coach Dave Preston. ‘’We had to apply so much serving pressure on them that we forced ourselves to mistakes.’’

Canada, 2-3 overall in tournament play, now plays in the ninth to 16th playoff starting Friday against Mexico.
