Great start for Canadian teams at NORCECA beach volleyball tournament

GUATEMALA CITY – Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City and Kara Zakrewski of Mississauga, Ont., as well as Rebecca Moskowitz of Toronto and Eve Marie Dansereau-Laberge of Verdun, Que., and the men’s team of Jesse Lelliott of Kelowna, B.C., and Ben Saxton of Calgary all won their matches Friday to open the fourth stop on the NORCECA beach volleyball circuit.

All three Canadian pairs are tuning up for the first stop on the FIVB World Tour circuit later this month in Brasilia, Brazil.

In women’s play, Rodrigue and Zakrewski defeated Maria Jose Orellana and Lourdes Ramirez of Guatemala 22-24, 21-17, 15-9 and Dania Hamilton and Samantha Mann of Saint Lucia 21-12, 21-8.

Meanwhile, Moskowitz and Dansereau-Laberge bounced Ingrid Morales and Natalia Alfaro of Costa Rica 21-13, 21-13 and another pair from Trinidad and Tobago 21-18, 21-14.

In men’s competition, Lelliott and Saxton won easily against Honduras 21-10, 21-6 then took a hard fought encounter over Dominicans Yewddys Perez and German Recio 21-19, 21-18.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
