Great start for Canada at NORCECA beach volleyball tournamentCHULA VISTA, Calif. (September 28, 2012) – Two Canadian teams went undefeated on Friday in round robin action to open the eighth stop on the 2012 NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) Beach Volleyball Circuit.
In men’s play, Canada was joined in the undefeated group by teams from Mexico, Dominican Republic and the United States
In Pool A, the Canada1 team of Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., and Ben Saxton of Calgary won their matches against the USA4 team of Adam Cabbage and Parker Kalmbach, 2-0 (21-17, 24-22) and then beat Marc Lomeli and Anthony Pippen of U.S. Virgin Islands, 2-0 (21-14, 21-13)
In Pool D, the USA2 team of Jeff Carlson and Tony Ciarelli beat the Canada2 duo of Cameron Wheelan of Barrie, Ont., and Michael Plantinga of Langley, B.C, 2-0 (21-12, 21-18). But the Canadian pair bounced back to upset USA1’s Alex Jones and Kyle Stevenson 21-13, 21-19
On the women’s side, Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto, the second-seeds, beat the USA 4 team of Sara Hughes and Kirby Burnham, 2-0 (21-12, 21-18) in Pool B and will complete pool play on Saturday against Guatemala’s Maria Jose Orellana and Maria Andrea Orellana.
Pool play will continue on Saturday (Sept. 29) with the matches starting at 9 a.m. Playoff matches will begin at 1 p.m. with the final matches scheduled to begin at 4 p.m. Semifinals and finals are scheduled for Sunday (Sept. 30).
