Good start for Canadians at NORCECA

 GRAND CAYMAN, Cayman Islands (March 22, 2013) – Three of the four Canadian entries won its two matches on Friday in the season opening event on the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) beach volleyball circuit.

In women’s competition, Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto defeated Ingrid Morales and Nathalia Alfaro of Costa Rica 19-21, 21-9, 17-15 and then Maria Orellana and Lourdes Ramírez of Guatemala 23-21, 19-21, 15-11 in pool D play.

In pool B, Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto won 21-14, 21-13 over Vanessa Virgen and Diana Estrada of Mexico and then beat Sharon Bovell and Anthazia Mason of Barbados 21-17, 21-9.

On the men’s side, Chaim Schalk of Red Deer and Ben Saxton of Calgary and Mexico’s Lombardo Ontiveros and Juan Virgen won also their two matches to secure spots in the top-eight bracket in pool B

Schalk/Saxton defeated Hector Soto and Victor Rivera of Puerto Rico 21-15, 21-15 and crushed Shervin Rankin and Duncan Hamann of Cayman Islands-A 21-9, 21-12. 

Defending champions Roberto Rodriguez and Eric Haddock of Puerto Rico came out victorious from their two outings in Pool C by defeating Christian Redmann and Matt Zbyszewski of Toronto 21-13, 22-20.

Competition continues through to Sunday.
