Good Friday for Canadians at NORCECABOCA CHICA, Dominican Republic, (March 29, 2013) – Canada’s men’s pairs teams rocketed to wins in their opening matches on Friday at the second stop on the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) beach volleyball circuit.
In Pool A, Christian Redmann and Matt Zbyszewski of Toronto, began their day with a 23-21, 21-11 triumph against Roberto Rodriguez and Erik Haddock of Puerto Rico-A and then continued with a 21-15, 27-25 victory over Yewddys Perez and William Sanchez of Dominican Republic-A.
Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., and Ben Saxton of Calgary, bronze medallists last week at the season opening stop, took down Dominican’s number-two pair 21-5, 21-9.
In women’s play, last week’s winner Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto lost their opening match to Brittany Hochevar and Summer Ross of the U.S., 23-25, 21-18, 15-13 before rebounding with a overwhelming victory over the number-three pair from the Dominican Republic (21-0, 21-0).
Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto lost their first match to Jennifer Fopma and Brooke Sweat of the U.S., 21-19, 19-21, 15-8 then dumped a Mexican pair 21-18, 21-8.
The preliminary phase will continue on Saturday to complete the pool play round with the conclusion scheduled on Sunday with the quarterfinals, semifinals and medal’s matches.
