Gatineau to Host 2010 Men's NORCECA Junior Championship

Volleyball Canada and the City of Gatineau are pleased to announce that they will host a major international volleyball event this August; the 2010 NORCECA Junior Men's Continental Championship. The event will be taking place August 16-21 and will be held at the newly opened Centre Sportif de Gatineau.

NORCECA stands for the North & Central America and Caribbean Confederation, and is one of five continental confederations within the Federation Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB). The 2010 NORCECA Junior Men’s Championship is scheduled to include 11 teams: Canada, Cuba, USA, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago, Honduras, Guatemala, Martinique and St. Lucia.

The event will not only determine the newest continental champion and offer valuable world ranking points, but will also offer three berths to the 2011 FIVB World Junior Championships. At the last NORCECA Junior Men’s Championship in 2008, Canada finished in second place behind Cuba, earning them a berth to this last summer’s 2009 FIVB Men's Junior World Championship in Pune, India where they finished in 12th place.

This NORCECA Junior Championship will be the first major international competition held in Gatineau since the Men's National Team volleyball program moved its training centre to this city in the spring of 2009. The competition schedule and ticket information will be confirmed in the coming weeks. Volleyball Canada is also in the process of recruiting volunteers for the event in various capacities.
