FIVB World Cup gets underway
CAMPINAS, Brazil (May 29, 2013)- Olympic medallists from the United States, Brazil and Latvia are among teams representing 16 countries for the inaugural FIVB Beach Volleyball World Cup Final that started Wednesday and runs until Sunday in Campinas, Brazil.
Canada has one entry in men’s and women’s competition.
On the women’s side, Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto lost their opening two matches in pool A action. They play two more round robin matches on Thursday. The top-two in each of the two pools advance to the semifinals on Saturday.
In men’s play, Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., and Ben Saxton of Calgary (in photo) fell in their opening match 21-12, 18-21, 21-19 to third-seed Germans Jonathan Erdmann and Kay Matysik.
Schalk and Saxton, playing in pool B, continue round robin play Thursday with one match and play two more on Friday.
