Day 1 at Beach Nationals

The 2012 Beach Nationals are off to a great start in Vancouver, BC! The first whistle blew Friday morning at 9:00am, officially kicking off the tournament at Spanish Banks Beach.

Maverick Hatch, a native of Comox, is in the hunt for his first National title in his home province.   After losing in the final of the 2011 Beach National Championships, Hatch and his partner, Sam Schachter, are hungry to take the coveted Sr. Mens Division 1 Championships this year.  Prior to the event, Maverick expressed his excitement; Last year at the championships, Sam and I lost in the final.  Needless to say we have one goal in mind this year.  Can’t wait for it to get started.  In Day 1, Hatch and Schachter took their first two matches with ease with two convincing wins to begin the tournament 21-17, 21-16 over D.Casey/S.Casey and 21-18, 21-14 over G.Vigrass/A.Hauser.  Hatch and Schatcheter resume today at 11:00 am.

While the senior competition has been an exciting start to the weekend, the youth divisions are not to be discounted.  Twin sisters and local athletes, Megan and Nicole McNamara are not backing down. The defending National Champions are looking to reclaim victory this year.  The 15 year old duo, playing at the 18U Girls division, won all their matches thus far, finishing 3-0 at the end of day 1.

Play will resume today and the finals will take place on Sunday August 19th.  Be sure to tune into Sports Canada.TV as they will be webcasting matches played on the Senior Feature court.  Details can be found at
