Canadians stopped at U19 worlds
PORTO, Portugal (July 13, 2013)– Canada’s two teams at the FIVB U19 World Championships in beach volleyball were stopped in their respective opening playoff matches on Saturday.
In the women’s round of 16, Sophie Bukovec of Toronto and Tiadora Miric of Thornhill, Ont., were upset by Andressa Ramalho and Paula Hoffmann of Brazil 21-15, 23-21. The ninth-seeded Canadians went 3-0 in round robin play to win their pool and get a bye to the final 16. They finish the tournament in ninth spot.
Bukovec was also 17th earlier this season at the U21 worlds with Alexandra Wooley of Toronto while Miric placed fifth with Wooley at the world youth championships last year.
In the men’s opening playoff round, Blake Scheerhoorn of Belleville, Ont., and Lucas Coleman of Whitby, Ont., lost to number-one seeds Jose Silva and Diogo Maia of Portugal 21-19, 21-15. The Canadians, 2-1 in the round robin, finish 17th in their international debut.
