Canadians Redmann and Saxton eliminated in main draw at World Tour

SHANGHAI – After a strong performance in qualifying on Tuesday, Christian Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary bowed out in first round action on Wednesday at a stop on the FIVB World Tour circuit in beach volleyball.

The Canadian pair provided a tough opposition to fourth-seeds Matthew Fuerbringer and Nicholas Lucena of the U.S., who eventually won the match 21-17, 17-21, 15-11. 

Redmann and Saxton still had a chance to advance through the loser’s bracket but fell to Santos Barbosa Thiago and Marques Silva Harley of the powerful Brazilian squad 21-13, 21-19. The Canadians advanced to the main draw with two straight set wins in qualifying on Tuesday.

Josh Binstock and Richard Van Huizen, both of Toronto as well as Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta.,(in photo) were eliminated in the third and final round of qualifying. Maverick Hatch of Comox and Sam Schachter of Toronto fell in the second round of qualifying.

In women’s qualifying on Wednesday, Kristina Valjas of Toronto and Caleigh Whitaker of Sharon, Ont., were eliminated in the third and final round, Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney, both of Toronto, in the second and Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City and Kacie MacTavish of Sharon, Ont., in the first.
