Canadians Reader and Schalk win first two matches at inaugural indoor tournament
AALSMEER, The Netherlands – Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., opened the main draw of the CEV Indoor Satellite Beach Volleyball Tournament with two comeback victories on Friday.
In their afternoon match, the reigning Canadian champions defeated Daan Spijkers and Emiel Boersma of the Netherlands 17-21, 21-14, 15-13 in 57 minutes. A few hours later, Reader and Chalk bounced Selcuc Sekerci and Volkan Gogtepe of Turkey 18-21, 21-12, 15-13.
“We had a big second game to beat the Turks,” said Reader. “It went really well. We have slid into our rhythm after only four days of training together (after a four- month break) and we are enjoying the indoor experience.”
This is first internationally sanctioned indoor beach volleyball event and performances will be worth world ranking points.
Competition continues through to Sunday.
