Canadians reach quarterfinals at world junior volleyball championshipsHALIFAX (August 31, 2012) Number-one seeds Taylor Pischke of Winnipeg and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Toronto defeated their compatriots Charlotte Sider and Julia Hamer of Toronto to advance to the quarterfinals Friday at the FIVB World Junior Championships in beach volleyball.
Pischke and Humana-Paredes took the match 21-10, 21-10 and have allotted 10 points or less in each of the six sets they have played so far.
On the men’s side, all three Canadian pairs are headed to the round of 16.
Number-one seeds Ben Chow of Surrey, B.C., and Nick Del Bianco of Coquitlam, B.C., sixth-seeds Dallas Keith of Toronto and Garrett May of London, Ont.,as well as Aaron Nusbaum of Aurora, Ont., and Grant O’Gorman of Toronto, all went undefeated in the preliminary round to get a bye to the round of 16.
“Wow, that match against Venezuela was too close for comfort,” said May. “ We played good but Venezuela duked it out with us really well and we’re tired. I would say we earned the afternoon off and we don’t have to play again until Saturday’s round of 16. Our Canadian men’s teams have done very well.”
The world juniors are being held through Sunday at the purpose-built beach volleyball complex on the Salter Lot of the Halifax Waterfront for the second straight year after a wildly successful tournament in 2011.
