Canadians Nusbaum and O’Gorman remain undefeated at beach volleyball world juniors

UMAG, Croatia - Aaron Nusbaum of Aurora, Ont., and Grant O'Gorman of Toronto (in photo) completed round robin play undefeated with two more victories on Friday at the world junior beach volleyball championships while Danny Demyanenko and Andrew Kocur, both of Toronto, also advanced to the playoff round.

Nusbaum and O’Gorman, ninth at last year’s world juniors and the eighth seeds here, defeated Jan Brulec and Valentin Turc of Slovenia 21-16, 21-16 and hammered fifth seeds Bartomeu Verger Fornes and Ruben Rodriguez Suarez of Spain 21-12, 21-12. The Canadians finish first in their group with a perfect 3-0 mark.

Demyanenko and Kocur opened with a win Thursday then lost their first match Friday to Sonny Hirini and Morgan Seymour of New Zealand 21-19, 11-21, 15-13. The Canadians won their third match in a walkover after a Czech pair was unable to compete due to injury and place second in their pool with a 2-1 mark behind the Kiwis.

The top two teams in each of the six pools pool along with the best four third place teams advance to the single-elimination bracket phase that will begin on Saturday.

In women’s competition, Nova Bozinoski of Burlington, Ont., and Sydney Krizmanich of Carlisle, Ont., completed the round robin winless and do not advance.
