Canadians in medal range at NORCECA beach volleyball tournament

 CHULA VISTA, Calif. (September 29, 2012) – An All-Canadian semifinal is set in men’s play while Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto are also in the final four at the eighth stop on the NORCECA beach volleyball circuit.

In men’s competition, two Canadians face each other in one semi and two Americans in the other.

Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., and Ben Saxton of Calgary battle Cameron Wheelan Barrie, Ont., and Michael Plantinga of Langley for one berth in the final.

The other in the semifinal pits Will Montgomery and Tri Bourne against Avery Drost and Jesse Rambis.  The semis start at 9 a.m.

The losers will play for the bronze medal at 11 a.m. while the gold medal match is scheduled for 1 p.m.

On the women’s side, teams from Canada, Mexico and the United States advanced to the semifinals.

On Sunday, top-seeded Bibi Candelas and Martha Revuelta of Mexico will play the USA-1 team of Emily Day and Heather Hughes in one women’s semifinal while Canada’s second-seeded Broder and Valjas take on the USA-3 duo of Summer Ross and Morgan Beck.

The women’s semifinals will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday (Sept. 30), with the final scheduled for noon.
