Canadians lose to top-seeds
THE HAGUE, The Netherlands (June 12, 2013)– Canada’s two teams in men’s competition lost to the top-seeds in their respective groups on Wednesday as main draw action opened at the FIVB Grand Slam World Tour beach volleyball tournament.
In Group B action, Christian Redmann of Toronto and Maverick Hatch of Comox, B.C., lost to second seeds and Olympic silver medallists Alison Cerutti and Emanuel Rego of Brazil 21-15, 21-14.
In Group E, Ben Saxton of Calgary and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., (in photo) fell to fifth seeds Jacob Gibb and Casey Patterson of the U.S., 31-29, 21-15. Two weeks ago at the World Cup final in Brazil, Saxton and Schalk upset the Americans in round robin play.
Both Canadian pairs close out the round robin portion of the tournament with two matches on Thursday. The top-three in each group advance to the knockout round.
