Canadians headed to quarterfinals at NORCECA beach tournament

GUATEMALA CITY- Three of the four Canadian teams at the second stop on the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) beach volleyball circuit advanced to the quarterfinals on Saturday.

In men’s competition, Christian Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary clinched first place in their pool with a perfect 2-0 mark defeating Carl Steadroy Collins and Kemoroy Percival of St. Kitts and Nevis 21-8, 21-6.

‘’We played a little better today than yesterday,’’ said Redmann. ‘’We are just trying to take it one game at a time and get better as the tournament goes on.’’

Meanwhile, Maverick Hatch of Comox, B.C., and Sam Schachter of Toronto defeated Guatemala, to conclude the round robin at 2-1 and second place in their pool, then knocked off Trinidad and Tobago in the round of 16. Next up in the quarters is Puerto Rico’s Roberto Rodriguez and Christopher Underwood, runners up at the season opener last month.

On the women’s side, Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto won their pool with a 2-0 mark defeating Nicaragua then bounced the Dominican Republic in the round of 16. They face Costa Rica in a quarterfinal on Sunday.

Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto lost their round of 16 match to Cuba.

Competition ends Sunday.
