Canadians head to quarterfinals at NORCECA beach volleyball tournament
CAYMAN ISLANDS – Three of the four Canadian entries at the opening stop on the NORCECA beach volleyball circuit are headed to the quarterfinals after Saturday’s play.
In men’s competition, Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., completed round robin play at 3-0 with a win over the Dominican Republic then advanced to the quarterfinals defeating Esteban Escobar and Gilberto Villegas of Costa Rica 21-12, 23-21 in their opening playoff match.
‘’Our match vs Costa Rica was epic,’’ said Reader. ‘’We went on an 11 point run in the first after being down 5-1. We then had a tight battle in the second with amazing rallies and came out on top with some clutch defensive plays.’’
The news was just as good for Josh Binstock and Richard Van Huizen of Toronto as they won their final round robin match in the morning and bounced Honduras’ Luis Baide and Wilfredo Vega by score of 21-9, 21-13 in their playoff opener.
For the women, Heather Bansley and Elizabeth Maloney of Toronto are looking sharp heading into their quarterfinals after blasting Honduras in their playoff opener 21-10, 21-5.
In what was the most entertaining match of the day, Brittany Hochevar and Jennifer Fopma of the U.S., edged Kacie MacTavish of Kelowna, B.C., and Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City 22-24, 25-23, 15-10 in a first round playoff match.
‘’It was a really good match,’’ said MacTavish. ‘’Lots of fans and it was very back and forth.’’
