Canadians fall to Cuba at NORCECA Youth Volleyball Championships

GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Canada, represented by Calgary’s under-17 Canuck Contact team, completed round robin play with an 0-2 record after falling to Cuba on Wednesday at the nine-country NORCECA men’s youth volleyball championships.

Cuba took its opening match of the tournament 25-14, 25-10, 25-13. The U.S., and Cuba will complete their round robin schedule Thursday facing off against each other for first spot in the pool. The Canadians, which lost to the U.S., Tuesday, head to the consolation playoff round to battle for seventh.

William Bremner, Canada’s team captain, says the experience gained from these matches make it all worthwhile. “We feel honoured,” he said. .”It is a powerful team and it was exciting to play against them.”

Cuba is very strong and they showed it today and we gave it our best shot,” added Canadian coach Don Saxton.

Other members of the Canadian team are Brett Walsh, Brian Prigden, Alex Cook, Luke Rauwarda, Scott Brunet, Sean Martin, Matthew Silver (pictured at right), Taylor Lebo, Evan Morrow, Matt Traynor and Matt Honeychurch.

The playoff rounds get underway Friday.
