Canadians eliminated in qualifying at beach volleyball World Tour stop

SHANGHAI – Matt Zbyszewski and Josh Binstock, both of Toronto, advanced to the third and final round of qualifying on Tuesday before being eliminated from advancing to the main draw at the second stop on the FIVB World Tour beach volleyball circuit.

The highlight of the day for the Canadian pair was upsetting Jason Lochhead and Kirk Pitman of New Zealand 21-19, 18-21, 15-12 in the second round. The Kiwis were the top-seeded team in qualifying while the Canadians were ranked 32nd.

However Zbyszewski and Binstock couldn`t repeat the magic one more time and completed an exhausting day falling to Michal Biza and Robert Kufa of the Czech Republic 21-18, 19-21, 15-8. The Canadian pair opened the tournament with a 21-15, 21-15 victory over Alexey Kulinich and Dmitriy Yakovlev of Kazakhstan.

Canada’s other two entries advanced to the second round of qualifying.

Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., won their opening match over a pair from Oman before dropping their second round match to Matteo Ingrosso and Paolo Ongrosso of Italy 21-14, 21-15.

It was a similar story for Jesse Lelliot of Kelowna, B.C., and Ben Saxton of Calgary (photo). They swept a Greek pair in the first round then lost two close sets to fourth seeds Petr Benes and Premysl Kubala of the Czech Republic 22-20, 21-19.

The women’s qualification round gets underway Wednesday with three Canadian pairs in action: Kristina Valjas and Anastasia Danilova of Toronto, Rebecca Moskowitz of Toronto and Eve Marie Dansereau-Laberge of Verdun, Que., and Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City and Kara Zakrzewski of Mississauga, Ont.
