Canadians beaten by Brazil in World League men’s volleyball

SAI BERNARDO CAMPO, Brazil (June 9, 2012)– Brazil defeated Canada 25-22, 25-17, 25-11 on Saturday in the FIVB World League tournament in men’s volleyball.

Dallas Soonias of Red Deer, Alta., was the top Canadian scorer with 11 points while Fred Winters of Victoria added seven.  Canada’s top scorer Gavin Schmitt of Saskatoon was rested most of the match because of a rib injury.

“I have the same view about our last five matches, especially when we face Brazil and Poland,’’ said Winters, the Canadian team captain.  ‘’Our team is too young and we are still learning how to play at a high level. While Brazil and Poland are candidates for medals and are ready for the big games, our team is still learning how to play the top matches”.

Brazil, ranked number-one in the world, improves its record to 5-3 for second place in pool B while the Canadians drop to 2-6.

“We fought hard in the first set and had good moments in the beginning of the match, but we could not sustain that level,’’ said Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag of Gatineau, Que.

First place Poland defeated Finland in four sets later on Saturday.

Canada closes out third round tournament action on Sunday against Finland.
