Canadians Bansley and Maloney drop opening two round robin matches

MOSCOW – After two wins in qualifying on Tuesday, Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto were beaten twice in round robin action on Wednesday at a FIVB stop on the beach volleyball World Tour circuit.

The pair lost their opening match to third-seeds Greta Cicolari and Marta Menegatti of Italy 21-16, 21-12 in the morning then fell n the afternoon to Lauren Fendrick and Brooke Hanson of the U.S., 21-15, 21-10.

The Canadians are in a must win situation for their third match on Thursday in order to have a chance to advance to the elimination round.

In men’s qualifying Christian Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary as well as Josh Binstock and Richard Van Huizen, both of Toronto, did not advance.
