Canadians advance to playoffs at U19 worlds

PORTO, Portugal (July 12, 2013)- Sophie Bukovec of Toronto and Tiadora Miric of Thornhill, Ont., completed a perfect round robin run and Blake Scheerhoorn of Belleville, Ont., and Lucas Coleman of Whitby, Ont., are also advancing at the FIVB U19 World Championships in beach volleyball.

Bukovec and Miric, the ninth seeds, placed first in pool H at 3-0 defeating Ines Pereira and Maria Tinoco of Portugal 21-12, 21-15. By finishing first in the pool they get a bye to the round of 16.

In men’s competition, Scheerhoorn and Coleman lost their last round robin match 21-17, 21-14 to fourth seeds Igor Velichko and Aleksander Margiev of Russia. The Russians (3-0) take top spot in pool D followed by the Canadians at 2-1 in second.

Scheerhorn and Coleman will join the other second and third place teams in a knockout match with the winners joining the eight pool winners in the round of 16.
