Canadian top-seeds fall short at world junior beach volleyball championships
HALIFAX (September 1, 2012)– Canada’s two top-seeded teams were eliminated in the quarterfinals on Saturday at the FIVB World Junior Championships in beach volleyball.
Number-one men’s seeds Ben Chow of Surrey, B.C., and Nick Del Bianco of Coquitlam, B.C., opened the day with a round of 16 win over a Mexican pair before meeting their match in eighth-seeds Dominik Stork and Fabian Schmidt of Germany who tookthe quarterfinal encounter over the Canadians 11-21, 21-19, 15-6.
Canada’s two other entries - sixth-seeds Dallas Keith of Toronto and Garrett May of London, Ont.,as well as Aaron Nusbaum of Aurora, Ont., and Grant O’Gorman of Toronto – lost hteir round of 16 matches.
On the women’s side, number-one seeds Taylor Pischke of Winnipeg and Melissa Humana-Paredes of Toronto lost in the quarterfinals to Drussyla andressa Felix Costa and Rebecca Cavalcanti Barbosa Silva of Brazil 24-22, 24-22.
The world juniors are being held through Sunday at the purpose-built beach volleyball complex on the Salter Lot of the Halifax Waterfront for the second straight year after a wildly successful tournament in 2011.
