Canadian teams playoff bound in beach volleyball
PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico – Christian Redmann of Oro Station, Ont., and Ben Saxton of Balzac, Alta., clinched a playoff berth in men’s play and Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto are also headed to the quarterfinals following Tuesday’s beach volleyball action at the Pan American Games.
Bansley and Maloney were in a must win situation in their final round robin match and they hammered Diana Romero and Marcela Avalos of El Salvador 21-10, 21-8 to finish in second spot in their pool with two wins and a loss.
That loss was on Monday to Puerto Rican pair Yarleen Santiago and Yamileska Yantin of Puerto Rico and the Canadians were still kicking themselves about that.
‘’It’s really too bad we lost that match because we’d have a much better draw for the quarterfinals,’’ said Bansley. ‘’But we came back and played a good match today. We capitalized on the inexperience of our opponents.’’
The Canadians play their quarterfinal on Wednesday.
On the men’s side, Redmann and Saxton defeated Dany Lopez and Gerald Umana of Nicaragua 24-22, 21-16 to stand 2-0 in round robin play. With the victory they are assured a berth in the quarterfinals with one round robin match remaining on Wednesday.
‘’The heat really drained us but we managed to pull through,’’ said Saxton. ‘’we really wanted to win this match and get our playoff spot locked up.’’
