Canadian teams head into must win situations at Quebec Open Jeep

QUEBEC CITY – Five Canadian teams will be in must win situations on Friday after Thursday’s opening main draw action at the $380,000 Quebec Open Jeep beach volleyball tournament. The competition is a stop on the FIVB World Tour Circuit.

In women’s competition, ninth-seeds Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., and Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., as well as Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto won their opening main draw match but lost their second.

Both pairs now head into the repechage bracket and must win to stay alive in the tournament.

‘’We still have a lot of energy,’’ said Martin after she and her partner loss to eighth-seeds Taiana Lima and Vivian Danielle da Conceicao Cunha of Brazil 25-23, 25-13. Earlier they defeated Deborah Giaoui and Mélody Benhamou of France 21-17, 18-21, 15-11.

‘’We played a good match against the Brazilians and made some nice defensive plays. It augurs well for tomorrow.’’

Bansley and Maloney, the 10th seeds, started the day with a 72 minute marathon win over Shinako Tanaka and Sayaka Mizoe of Japan 28-26, 17-21, 22-20. It’s the longest match of the tournament so far.

In the second round they lost to seventh seeds Vasiliki Arvaniti and Maria Tsiartsiani of Greece 21-14, 21-14.

Canada’s other four entries in the main draw were eliminated losing their opening two matches. They were: Jaime Broder of Victoria and Ashley Voth of Winnipeg; Victoria Cowley and Alexandra Mingay, both of Toronto; Kacie MacTavish of Sharon, Ont., and Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City and Victoria Altomare and Melissa Humana-Paredes, both of Toronto.

On the men’s side, three Canadian pairs are in the repechage bracket after a win and a loss on Thursday. They are: Christian Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary; Maverick Hatch of Comox, B.C., and Sam Schachter of Toronto as well as Josh Binstock and Richard Van Huizen, both of Toronto.

Martin Reader of Comox and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., lost their first match and with drew from their second due to injury.

Main draw continues Friday at I’Externat St-Jean Berchmans and Seminaire des Peres Maristes.
