Canadian teams announced for Continental Cup Olympic qualifier

 OTTAWA (June 16, 2012) – Volleyball Canada announced today its two men’s and two women’s teams for the Continental Cup Olympic qualifying tournament in beach volleyball June 21-23 in Mazatlan, Mexico.

For the women, the Canadian entries are Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney, both of Toronto, and Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., and Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que. 

For the men, the Canadian pairs are Josh Binstock of Toronto and Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Ben Saxton of Calgary and Christian Redmann of Toronto.

The winner in both the men’s and women’ competition earns a berth for the 2012 London Games.  The second and third place teams will head to Moscow for a last chance Olympic qualifying event.

If Canada earns a berth to London,  then there will be a Canadian trials between the teams that are competing in the NORCECA Continental Cup.   The trial will be on July 7, 2012 at Ashbriges Bay in Toronto to determine which team will represent Canada in London.

For both the men’s and women’s competition, Cuba, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua and Puerto Rico will also field two pairs apiece and Costa Rica will have one entry.

Selections to the Continental Cup for both men and women were based on performances on the FIVB World Tour circuit.
