Canadian pairs eliminated in round of 16 at Olympic test event

LONDON – Kacie MacTavish of Sharon, Ont., and Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City as well as Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney of Toronto were eliminated in the round of 16 on Friday at the at the FIVB beach volleyball international.

MacTavish and Rodrigue, seeded 10th, lost to second seeds Chen Xue and Xi Zhang of China 21-13, 21-15.

It is the second week in a row, the Canadian pair advance to a main draw at an international event.

‘’We were feeling a bit tired,’’ said Rodrigue, who made a pit stop to Toronto in between the two tournaments with her partner. ‘’But overall it was a good experience for us. We were happy with our matches against the Chinese and Americans because they were ranked higher than us. We feel our level of play is improving.‘’

Bansley and Maloney, the fifth-seeds, fell to Lucy Boulton and Denise Johns of Britain 26-24, 22-20.
