Canadian pair on track for more success in 2012

CAYMAN ISLANDS (March 23, 2012) – Julie Rodrigue of Quebec City and Kacie McTavish of Sharon, Ont., are one of four Canadian teams which got into action today at the opening stop on NORCECA (North, Central America and Caribbean) beach volleyball circuit.

Rodrigue and McTavish joined forces last season and produced an impressive season capped by a gold medal performance at the Canadian championships.  It’s those types of performances they feel makes them a contender for a spot on the Olympic team.

‘’We are getting to know each other’s game really well,’’ said Rodrigue, in her fifth season on the national team.  ‘’Last season was very encouraging for us.  We established a very strong service game and have really improved overall in training  this winter.’’

Both Rodrigue and McTavish were former indoor standouts with Universite Laval and Syracuse University respectively.

‘’Last season’s success didn’t surprise us,’’ said McTavish.  ‘’We had a slow start but worked really hard.’’

Jamie Broder of Victoria and Victoria Altomare of Toronto are Canada’s other women’s entry this weekend.

Competing for Canada on the men’s side are: Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Josh Binstock of Toronto as well as Sam Schachter of Toronto and Maverick Hatch of Comox.

The competition runs through to Sunday.
