In the final. Schalk and Saxton defeated Tri Bourne and Will Montgomery of the U.S., 21-16, 21-15 in 37 minutes on a hot and breezy day in Chula Vista.
“We played well,” Montgomery told USA Volleyball. “They’re just a really good team and they played really well in that match. They’re the best in the tournament and they deserve the gold. We deserve our silver.”
Schalk and Saxton never trailed in the gold medal match, keeping Montgomery and Bourne at bay with consistent play in transition and tough blocking.
Canada also captured the bronze medal as Cameron Wheelan of Barrie, Ont., and Michael Plantinga of Langley, B.C., defeated Avery Drost and Jesse Rambis of the U.S., 31-29, 21-19 in 55 minutes.
In women’s competition, Mexico’s Martha Revuelta and Bibi Candelas beat Jamie Broder of Victoria and Kristina Valjas of Toronto for the bronze medal, 2-1 (17-21, 22-20, 15-9).
There are still three more stops on the NORCECA (North and Central American and Caribbean) circuit this season.
