Canadian men’s volleyball team roster finalized for Pan Am Games

OTTAWA – With its top players currently playing overseas in professional leagues, Canada will field its Full-time Training Centre squad for the men’s volleyball tournament at the Pan Am Games which gets underway next week in Guadalajara, Mexico.

At the Pan Am Games tournament, Canada is in Group B with Brazil, the U.S., and Puerto Rico. The Group A teams are Cuba, Argentina, Mexico and Venezuela.

The men’s tournament takes place in the second week of the Games. Canada opens round robin play October 24 against Brazil, then faces the U.S., October 25 and Puerto Rico October 26. The top team in each group gets a bye to the semifinals on October 28 while the second and third place countries cross over for the quarterfinals on October 27. The medal matches are October 29.

‘’We haven’t set any goals in terms of performance for these Games,’’ said Volleyball Canada’s high performance director Julien Boucher. ‘’This is going to be a great experience for our players. The Pan Ams are always a very strong tournament and this is one of the biggest sports gatherings outside the Olympic Games.’’

There are four Albertans on the team: Ciaran McGovern from Grande Prairie, Spencer Leiske of Lacombe, Blair Bann (on photo) of Edmonton and Tanner Nault of Sherwood Park. Three players are from Ontario: Tyler Santoni of Kingston, Sander Ratsep of London, Reid Halpenny of Grand Bend.

The other team members are Jacob Kilpatrick of St. John, N.B., Kevin Miller of Russell, MB, Max Burt of Gander, N.L., Devon Parkinson of Victoria and Louis-Pierre Mainville of Notre-Dame-de-l’Ile-Perrot, Que.

Mainville, a member of the national team, could potentially play his first matches since undergoing knee surgery this past spring. Boucher said he would be limited to the back court for services and defence.

At the last Pan American Games in 2007, Brazil won the gold medal, the U.S., was second and Cuba third. Canada placed seventh. Canada’s last Pan Am Games medal in men’s volleyball was a bronze at the 1999 Games in Winnipeg.
