Canadian Junior Women to play for fifth place.

 DES MOINES, Iowa (July 28, 2012) - The Team Canada Junior Women's Team will play for fifth place on Saturday vs the Chilean Junior National Team in their final match at the 2012 USA Volleyball High Performance Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.

Friday's matches in Pool 1 of the Championship bracket saw Canada play two matches. In the first match Canada lost 3-0 to the USA Junior National Team. The Canadians gave team USA their toughest test of the competition so far and were in a position to win the third set before losing 25-23.

 " I am very proud of how the team competed in this match" said Canada’s head coach Scott Koskie " The USA Junior Women have some very talented players including a 6'8" middle blocker and that can be intimidating to see for the first time.  Once the players began to figure out Team USA's style of play, we grew more confident and put ourselves in a position to win the third set."

After only a two hour break the Canadians returned to the court to play the USA Youth (under 17) National Team which were the undefeated top seed from preliminary pool 3. After a dominating first set performance that saw Canada win 25-21, Team Canada held a 17-15 lead in the second set before the set turned in favour of Team USA which went on to win 25-19 and then take the next two sets and the match 3-1.

"We played exceptional volleyball in the first set and were in control of the match until 17-15 in the second set" said Koskie" Our team took away the USA's preferred style of play for the better part of 2 sets.  To their credit, USA made a couple of adjustments that we were unable to match and that swung the match in their favour"

 

Team Canada plays Chile at 2pm.
