Canadian Junior Men's preparation plans in place for 2011 World Championship

OTTAWA - Volleyball Canada is planning a comprehensive plan for its Canadian Junior Men’s Team as they prepare to compete in the 2011 FIVB World Junior Championship scheduled for August 1-10 in Brazil.

The silver medalists from the 2010 NORCECA Junior Championship will begin their preparations with a selection camp in May involving the top U21 athletes in the country. All athletes from last summers team along with numerous others that have been identified over the past year from the Canadian university or college seasons will attend the selection camp scheduled for May 17-22 in Gatineau, Québec.

The selected team will then train for the duration of the summer and currently have plans for preparation matches in early June in Canada, as well as a trip to Slovenia in July where they plan to play against Slovenia and India. Finally, the team will travel to Argentina just prior to the World Championship for final tune-up matches before arriving in Brazil on July 30.

“We are very excited about the plans and investment we are making to not only help our Canadian Junior Team prepare for the 2011 World Championship in Brazil, but also to develop talent that will help Canada excel in the future as these athletes move on to the next level of national team involvement,” stated Julien Boucher, Volleyball Canada’s High Performance Director.

“We look forward to the opportunity to compete against the best teams in the world in August, and know that Brazil as the world leaders in volleyball will run an excellent tournament and experience for all athletes involved."

Canada is hoping for a lucky number seven as they have competed in six previous World Junior Men’s Championships, including a best result of 5th in 1999.
