Canadian beach volleyball players set for Olympic qualifying event

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – Four Canadian teams are set to start the all-important Continental Cup beach volleyball tournament April 18-20.

The Continental Cup is one method for teams in the North and Central America and Caribbean Conference to qualify for the Olympics. The top-four teams in both men’s and women’s competition advance to next year’s Continental Cup Final. The winners from the Final qualify for the Olympics.

Also, the second and third ranked teams from all five Continental Cups will be able to fight for the last berth for the Olympic Games in a World Cup tournament June 25th to July 1st, 2012.

In men’s competition, the Canadian entries are Martin Reader of Comox, B.C., and Chaim Schalk of Red Deer, Alta., along with Christopher Redmann of Toronto and Ben Saxton of Calgary.

On the women’s side, the entries are Canadian veterans Annie Martin of Sherbrooke, Que., and Marie-Andrée Lessard of Ville LaSalle, Que., (in photo) as well as Heather Bansley and Liz Maloney, both of Toronto.
