Canada wins second match U23 Pan American Men’s Volleyball CupLANGLEY, B.C. (September 27, 2012) — Canada, represented by the Trinity Western University Spartans, earned its second win at the Men’s U23 Pan American Cup on Thursday night, sweeping the Dominican Republic 25-18, 27-25, 27-25.
Dan Jansen Van Doorn of Langley and Bradley Kufske of Abbotsford, B.C., were the top scorers for Canada, with 13 points apiece, while Nick del Bianco of Surrey, B.C., scored 11, and Branden Schmidt of Winton, Alta., 10.
“We came out with the appropriate energy and we execute our skills at a higher level. Our block defence is what pushed us to the win. Dominican played great and pushed us late but it worked out for us in the end,” said Canadian captain Jarrod Offereins.
“I thought our blocking was the difference tonight.,” added Canada’s head coach Ben Josephson. “Their passing was good but our blocking was able to stop some of their great athletes. Our goal was to slow their attackers down and we did just enough to win.”
With the win, Canada improves to two wins and no losses and is tied with Brazil and Argentina which also have two wins. The Dominicans and Mexico are winless. The top-two in the standings advance to the final on Sunday while third and fourth play for the bronze.
In Thursday’s other match Brazil handed Argentina its first loss winning 25-20, 31-29, 25-18.
Canada faces Brazil on Friday night at 8 p.m., and Argentina on Saturday night, also at 8 p.m.
