Canada wins first match at NORCECA youth volleyball championships

GUADALAJARA, Mexico - Canada, represented by Calgary’s under-17 Canuck Contact team, earned its first victory at the NORCECA men’s youth volleyball championships on Friday defeating the island nation of Curacao 25-15, 25-18, 25-20.

With the victory the Canadians remain in contention for a seventh place finish. Canada opened the tournament with round robin losses to powerhouses the U.S., and Cuba to head to the consolation side of the playoff round. The tournament ends Sunday.

William Bremner led the Canadian attack Friday with eight points.

“These are good opportunities to play and gain international experience,” said Canadian coach Don Saxton.  “I’m pleased today because our kids played well in the back defense.”

Other members of the Canadian team are Brett Walsh, Brian Prigden, Alex Cook, Luke Rauwarda, Scott Brunet, Sean Martin, Matthew Silver (pictured), Taylor Lebo, Evan Morrow, Matt Traynor and Matt Honeychurch.
