Canada wins fifth place match at World Challenge Club Volleyball Cup

MAR DEL PLATA, Argentina (September 22, 2012) – Allen Meek of Sherwood Park, Alta., scored 18 points to lead Canada’s Full Time Centre men’s team to a 26-24 25-22, 28-26 over the University of California – Irvine on Saturday in the fifth place match at the World Challenge Club Volleyball Cup.

Canada finishes the six-club tournament with an overall record of one win and two losses.  The team will remain in Argentina until October 1 with three exhibition matches still on its schedule next week.

“It was a back and forth match and we rotated our line-up throughout the match,” said Canada’s head coach Vincent Pichette of Gatineau, Que.  “We started slowly in each of the sets but the players adapted well in service reception which allowed us to have a balanced attack.”

Marc Howatson of Victoria scored 17 points with 13 on the attack, two blocks and two aces.  Jonathan Sloane of Winchester, Ont., delivered three aces and two blocks in his 14 points showing.

The medal matches were held later Saturday.
