Canada sweeps Turkey at international men’s volleyball tournament
PARNU, Estonia – Fred Winters of Victoria collected 11 points on Saturday as Canada defeated Turkey 27-25, 25-12, 25-18 at the four-country Parnu International men’s volleyball tournament.
Canada, the tournament’s top-seed at number-22 in the world, improved its record to 2-0. The Canadians are in Europe tuning up for the final World League qualifying series against Puerto Rico August 20-21 in Kingston, Ont., as well as an Olympic qualifying tournament later this year.
"We started well but we had trouble with our reception in the second part of the first set,’’ said Canada’s head coach Glenn Hoag. ‘’We were able to finish strong and win the set. Our game was well in place in the second and third set, our focus was very good.’’
Gavin Schmitt of Saskatoon added nine points for the victors as did Toon Van Lankvelt of River, Man., who earned three of his nine on service aces. Justin Duff of Winnipeg also sparkled with six kills and an ace.
Canada concludes the tournament Sunday against Estonia. Canada opened the tournament Friday with a four-set victory over Latvia.
