Canada surprises Puerto Rico in men’s volleyball at Pan Am Games
GUADALAJARA, Mexico (October 28, 2011) – Canada turned the tables on Puerto Rico in men’s volleyball on Friday with a 25-20, 19-25, 25-19, 25-20 victory in a consolation semifinal match at the 2011 Pan American Games.
With the victory the Canadians advance to the fifth place match against the U.S., on Saturday. Just two days ago, the Puerto Ricans knocked Canada out of the medal round in a straight sets win.
‘’It was a nice win for us,’’ said Canada’ coach Vincent Pichette. ‘’We continued to show improvement. It was a disappointing loss to them a couple of days ago but we had the day off yesterday and came back fresh and rested for this match.’’
Spencer Leiske of Lacombe, Alta., continued to be Canada’s top point producer with a game high 16. Jacob Kilpatrick of Saint John, N.B., added 12 and Devon Parkinson of Victoria 10.
The championship semifinals are later tonight with Brazil facing Argentina and Cuba up against Mexico.
The Canada-U.S., match starts at 5 p.m. local time on Saturday. The Canadians defeated the U.S., in a five-set thriller earlier this week.
