Canada in strong group at women’s Pan Am Cup

WINNIPEG (July 10, 2012)– Canada’s national women’s volleyball team opens the 2012 Pan Am Cup volleyball tournament against two Olympic-bound countries.  The tournament runs from July 12 to 20 in Ciudad, Mexico.

The 12 players for Team Canada Cup were selected last week from a group of 34 athletes that were training in Winnipeg since the end of May.

Canada is in a strong pool alongside USA, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico and Colombia. Countries in the other pool rounding out the 12 team competition include Brazil, Argentina, Peru, Mexico, Trinidad & Tobago and Costa Rica.

The Canadians open against the Americans on July 12, then face the Dominican Republic on July 13.  Their preliminary round continues against Colombia on July 14, Puerto Rico July 15 and Cuba July 16.  The top team in each pool gets a bye to the semifinals while second and third advance to the quarterfinals.

The quarterfinals are July 18, the semis, July 19 and the medal matches July 20.

"We started a new cycle of training now and we are lucky to maintain five players from the previous quadrennial that will complement some promising new young athletes who will have their first international experience at the Pan Am Cup next week," said Canada’s head caoch Arnd Ludwig.

"Our goal for the Pan Am Cup is to get these young players experience at the international level and try to get better every set and every match and learn how to compete at that level. We will try and finish in the top 4 of the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) teams to get into the Grand Prix for 2013."
