OMAHA, Nebraska (September 18, 2013)- Canada lost in five sets 19-25, 28-26, 25-23, 13-25, 15-8, to Puerto Rico on Wednesday at the NORCECA (North and Central America and Caribbean) championships in women’s volleyball.
Canada concludes the round robin with a 1-1 record for second spot in Group C and advances to the quarterfinals. Puerto Rico (2-0) wins the group.
Jaimie Thibeault of Sylvan Lake, Alta., led Canada with 13 kills and five blocks for 18 points. Tabitha Love of Dauphin, Man., added 16 points and Lisa Barclay of Brandon, Man., 15.
“It was definitely frustrating that we didn’t persist in the fifth set,’’ said Canada’s captain Brittney Page of Vernon, B.C. ‘’It was really disappointing for us. I think we just needed to maintain our highest level and we could have prevailed.”
After dominating the fourth set, Canada jumped to a 5-2 lead to open the fifth.
“We had a great start in the fifth set and all of a sudden we stopped playing,’’ said Canada’s head coach Arnd Ludwig. ‘’There were a few good serves from their side and we went down a little. I think this is something that we have to learn from; always try to keep the same pace and don’t have so many ups and downs.”
The winner of the tournament automatically qualifies to the 2013 FIVB Grand Champions Cup in Japan, Nov. 12 to 17. The U.S. team won the event in 2011 in Puerto Rico, and they are currently ranked #2 in the world – the top ranked team at this event.
The U.S. swept Cuba to take Group B with Mexico ranking second while the Dominican Republic and Trinidad and Tobago were 1-2 in Group A. The Americans and Dominicans get byes to the semis. Canada faces Trinidad and Tobago in its quarterfinal on Thursday.
