Canada powers over Portugal in WL

Mississauga, ON, CANADA, June 07, 2013: FIVB Men's Volleyball World League play continued Friday at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga, Ontario, with Canada decisively winning Pool C's 11th match over Portugal (25-19 25-19 25-18).

Canada came on strong, winning the first set by six points. Portugal started the second set determined to build momentum, but Canada responded winning again by six.

The confidence of the larger Canadian team shone through in the third set, as they held the lead throughout to win by seven.

Gavin Schmitt of Saskatoon, Sask. led Canada's offense with 14 points, which included 10 kill spikes, 3 service aces and a block. “We had a little more fight and delinquency to our game this weekend... It was fun to play here in Mississauga in front of the Canadian fans!”

Flavio Gulinelli, an Italian national who is Portugal's men's coach, conceded that his team was no match for the Canadians today: "First of all, Canada played a very good game. We tried, we fought, but it was not enough."

Tomorrow, the two teams meet again, with Portugal looking to learn from tonight's loss: "We had to take the game into our hands and not expect Canada to make mistakes," said Portugal's captain Joao Jose. "We were not able to keep the intensity the whole match - we must improve."

Last week, Canada had one win and one loss against the Dutch team. Canada plays Portugal again tomorrow night at the Hershey Centre. Tickets still available at The Hershey Centre or at ticketmaster.ca.

Glenn Hoag, Canadian coach, said: "I really enjoyed the fact that we were able to put more pressure than we did on Holland last week with our serving.... So we hope to repeat this performance tomorrow, that's the important thing."

Hoag added that the fans were able to witness some “spectacular volleyball tonight.”

Fred Winters, captain of the Canadian team, said: "It was a good bounce-back win after last week - we made them play and we had very few mistakes.... We know we have to play even better tomorrow to win again."
