Canada to play in seventh place match at Pan Am Cup
CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico – With a spot in next year’s World Grand Prix on the line, Puerto Rico prevailed over Canada 3-1 (25-19, 25-14, 24-26, 25-16) on Friday night at the 10th Pan American Women’s Volleyball Cup consolation semifinal.
The top four teams from the NORCECA (North, Central and Caribbean zone) would book tickets to next year’s Grand Prix and those spots have now been earned by the Dominican Republic, the U.S., Cuba and Puerto Rico
The Canadians overall record now drops to 3-4 and they will play Peru Saturday afternoon for seventh place.
Canada’s top scorer Friday was Sarah Pavan of Kitchener, Ont., with 21 points including four service aces while Tasha Holness of Calgary added eight with four of her points blocking. Pavan is second in tournament scoring with 90 points.
“Puerto Rico really did a good job, unfortunately we couldn’t play better,” a disappointed Pavan said.
In the championship round, the Dominican Republic will face Brazil for the gold on Saturday.
