Canada to play for bronze at U23 Pan Am Cup

LANGLEY, B.C. (September 29 2012) – Argentina advanced to the final at the Men’s U23 Pan American Cup men’s volleyball tournament Saturday with a 26-24, 25-15, 25-23 victory over Canada represented at this tournament by the Trinity Western University Spartans.

With the victory, the Argentineans (three wins and one loss) place second in the round robin standings and face Brazil on Sunday in the championship match.  Brazil completed the round robin at 4-0 after a 25-16, 25-16, 25-13 victory over Mexico.

Canada, third with a 2-2 record, advances to the bronze medal match against the Dominican Republic (1-3).

Brad Kufske led Canada with 16 points and Nick del Bianco added 11 for Canada.

“Tonight’s match was frustrating. All the credit goes to Argentina because they played great. They stopped us defensively. They frustrated us”, said captain Canadian captain Jarrod Offereins. “We tried to do too much in return and we fell apart as a group. We didn’t bring as much energy as we should. Argentina played a great game and they were the better team tonight and they deserved the win.”

Canada’s coach Ben Josephson stated: “I thought we got thoroughly outplayed by a superior team tonight. Argentina’s skilled especially in first touch. They’re reception and defence were very impressive. I’m hoping our team can learn from that that example. We served in enough but they just did a great job of not making errors.”

The Canada-Dominican match goes at 3 p.m. Sunday followed by the gold medal final at 5 p.m.
