Canada places sixth in men’s volleyball at Pan Am Games
GUADALAJARA (October 29, 2011)– Canada and the U.S., produced a second five-set battle this week but this time the Americans prevailed 22-25, 25-15, 25-19, 21-25, 19-17 on Saturday to win the fifth place match at the 2011 Pan American Games.
Spencer Leiske of Lacombe, Alta., continued to be a scoring machine for the Canadians with 23 points while Sander Ratsep of London, Ont., added 14 and Jacob Kilpatrick of Saint John, N.B., 10.
For Canada’s coach Vincent Pichette this was a great opportunity to get international exposure for his young squad. “It was a good experience and we appreciate the support of the fans of Guadalajara”, said Pichette.
“We had our ups and downs, it was so tight in the end, and after all we want to thank the volunteers and the people for making us feel great”, Canadian captain Louis Pierre Mainville, remarked.
In round robin play earlier this week, the Canadians defeated the Americans in five sets as well. Over the Canadian team represented by its Full time National Training Centre team based in Gatineau, Que., had two wins and three losses.
The medal matches are tonight with Cuba facing Brazil for gold and Mexico against Argentina for bronze.
