Canada in Pan Am Cup quarters
IQUITOS, Peru, June 12, 2013 – Canada qualified to the quarterfinals of the XII Pan American Cup women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday night defeating Costa Rica 25-18, 25-23, 25-19.
With fewer errors than the opponent (16 to 23), and a difference of 36-30 in attacks, the Canadians claimed the victory to finish in second place in Pool B with two wins and a loss.
Canada opened the tournament losing in five sets to Cuba on Monday then defeated Peru in five on Tuesday.
Top scorers for Canada were Kyla Richey with 18 points and Lisa Barclay with 15.
Canada’s head coach Arnd Ludwig was pleased with his team’s performance.
“I am very happy with this result since it is the first occasion in many years that we are able to advance to the quarterfinals of the Cup,’’ said Ludwig. ‘’I feel glad about the progress of the team and I hope we can maintain the same rhythm in the next phase.
Thursday is a rest day. Canada faces Brazil in its quarterfinal on Friday. The Brazilians were also 2-1 in round robin play and placed second in Pool C. Cuba faces Argentina in the other quarterfinal.
The winners of the two quarterfinals move into the semis with the U.S., and the Dominican Republic. The Americans and Dominicans received a bye to the final four sporting the best records in the round robin.
