Canada loses to Poland in World League volleyballSAO BERNARDO CAMPO, Brazil (June 8, 2012) – Poland defeated Canada 25-20, 25-20, 25-18 on Friday to open third round play in the FIVB World league men’s volleyball tournament.
The Poles, ranked fourth in the world, are in first place in pool B and bettered their record to six wins and a loss. Brazil, which beat Finland in straight sets earlier Friday, is now 4-3 while Canada and Finland are both 2-5.
Bartosz Kurek was the top scorer for Poland with 16 points, followed by teammates Zbigniew Bartman, and Piotr Nowakowski, with 12 points each. Canadian receiver Gord Perrin of Creston, B.C., scored 11 points for Canada.
“We played at a good level until the second technical timeout of each set and a volleyball match is always decided in the second half of the sets,’’ said Canada’s team captain Fred Winters of Victoria. ‘’We made a lot of mistakes. Their experience made the difference.’’
Canada’s best set was the second.
In the second set, the Canadians grabbed an 8-6 lead at the first technical timeout following a backcourt spike by Gavin Schmitt of Saskatoon, who entered third round play second in tournament scoring behind Bartman. The Canadians were eventually caught by the Poles who imposed their rhythm for the rest of the match.
